PUBLIC THINKER Profile - Koritha Mitchell

When the Women’s Media Center recognized me in October 2023 for my public scholarship, the ceremony was in New York City. It was unforgettable, but I didn’t want that event to be the only acknowledgement. My dear friend and colleague Harvey Young made sure it wouldn’t be by doing a Public Thinker profile at Public Books. I have long admired the series, so it means a lot to be featured in it.

Harvey and I had a great conversation that I hope you’ll take the time to read and share widely. I know readers will get plenty out of it.

Besides all that is worthwhile for others in that discussion, it’s special to me. The conversation stands as further confirmation that Harvey Young is part of why I understand the joy of having what Toni Morrison called “a friend of your mind.”

As if that weren’t enough, when Johns Hopkins University Press saw the Public Thinker profile, they removed the paywall, through June 14, 2024, on an essay we reference! Even after that date, it can be accessed here: muse.jhu.edu/article/715439

P.S. I have no problem with the fact that there is normally a paywall. Scholarly journals need to survive in this anti-intellectual culture somehow! That’s especially true for journals that have been committed (for decades) to the most under-attack topics.
